Diabetes Care
Managing diabetes effectively requires careful, consistent daily routines and monitoring. Shirecare provides skilled homecare focused on supporting your health, diet, and medication management, helping you enjoy confident and independent living at home.
How Shirecare can help
We offer tailored visiting care to support people living with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Our care focuses on providing proactive encouragement and support with daily routines, including preparing nutritious meals, gentle exercise and other essential wellbeing tasks.
Our carers can also prompt you to check your blood sugar levels and accurately record the readings, in line with your individual care plan, helping you to maintain a clear record of your blood glucose levels and identify any concerns that may need to be reported.
Managing Diabetes at home
Great diabetes care should fit naturally into your daily life. Our dedicated carers provide practical, person-centred support to help you follow your individual care plan with confidence, helping to maintain consistency and reduce worry.
This can include prompting you to take your medication at the prescribed times, supporting your dietary requirements, and prompting you to check your blood sugar levels and accurately recording the readings in line with your care plan. We aim to make diabetes management feel more manageable by supporting you with your daily routines in the comfort and familiarity of your own home.
Our trained professional staff
All Shirecare carers who support people with diabetes receive specific, comprehensive training.
This training focuses on recognising the signs of low and high blood sugar, providing appropriate support when required, and assisting with daily diabetes routines. This includes prompting and reminding you to use your insulin pen in line with your individual care plan.
Our team understands the personal nature of daily diabetes management and provides reliable, compassionate support tailored to each person’s individual needs.

Why Choose Shirecare?
We are a local provider committed to raising the standard of care across our region. Choose us for:
-
Our safety-led culture
Our approach is built on a foundation of safety. Led by a Managing Director with a background as a Health and Safety Engineer, we apply strict risk assessments and governance to every visit. We prioritise the safety of our clients and staff above all else.
-
Consistent, regular care team
We know that seeing a stranger can be unsettling. We work hard to allocate a small, regular team to each client. This consistency allows genuine relationships to build, and our carers become very welcome visitors you can trust and rely upon.
-
Local knowledge
We are not a faceless agency. Our head office is based in Derbyshire, and our carers live in the communities they serve. We know the local area, meaning we are reliable and never far away when you need us.
-
Transparent communication
Many of our clients need their families to be fully informed of their care plan, and we’re more than happy to do this. We use digital care planning tools that allow us to track visits and update records in real-time. If there is ever a concern or a change in your loved one’s condition, we will let you know immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do your carers help with insulin, are they trained to inject?
Our carers can support you with your insulin routine by prompting and reminding you to use your insulin pen at the appropriate time, in line with your individual care plan.
We do not administer injectable medication. Where you self-administer insulin, our role is to provide timely prompts and reminders and support you to follow your agreed care plan safely and consistently.
Can your team help me stick to a specific low-carb or diabetic diet?
Yes, absolutely! Our carers work closely with your specific dietary instructions (including weighing food or carbohydrate counting) to plan and prepare all meals and snacks, ensuring your nutritional requirements are met.
What happens if my blood sugar is dangerously high or low during a visit?
Our carers are trained to recognise the signs and symptoms of low and high blood sugar and will follow your individual care plan and the appropriate emergency procedures.
If your blood sugar is dangerously high or low, our carers will provide appropriate support within their role, including prompting or supporting you to follow your agreed treatment plan where applicable. They will seek urgent medical assistance when required and contact your family or nominated emergency contact in accordance with your care plan.
Our priority is to respond promptly, keep you safe and ensure that any concerns are reported to the appropriate healthcare professional or emergency service.
Is your support only clinical, or do you offer social companionship too?
We believe in holistic care. While we manage your clinical needs, our visiting care service always includes social companionship. Our carers are friendly faces who help you stay engaged, run errands, and enjoy your time at home.
How often do you tell doctors or family members about my blood glucose readings?
All relevant readings and observations are carefully logged. We establish a clear communication schedule with your family and nominated healthcare professionals (like your GP or specialist nurse) to ensure they are kept informed of your health changes and trends.
